A truly special New Zealand native fern, the Drooping Filmy Fern has incredibly fine, translucent fronds with a soft, lace-like appearance. Each frond is only one cell thick, giving it a delicate, almost glowing look in low light. It naturally grows in cool, permanently damp forests and looks beautiful in terrariums, creating a natural forest-floor feel.
This fern is slow-growing and does best in cool, humid conditions. It requires consistently high humidity and should be kept out of direct sun and away from heat, as warm or dry conditions can cause the fronds to turn brown. Try not to let it dry out, as the delicate fronds can dry quickly in low humidity.
If browning does occur, the fern can often recover slowly with cool, humid conditions. You can also trim away the fully brown parts so the plant can focus energy on new growth, as new shoots can grow back from the roots. However, this can take some time, and the roots need to be kept moist at all times, ideally in damp sphagnum moss.
