The Kōtukutuku Tree's Winter 'Letting Go

Yesterday, I took a lovely stroll by Lake Brunner and stumbled upon a beautiful flower called Fuchsia. Did you know that Kōtukutuku, which is the largest fuchsia species globally, is one of New Zealand’s unique deciduous native trees?
Its name, ‘Kōtukutuku,’ signifies the ‘Letting go’ of its leaves during winter.
These vibrant flowers catch the eyes of hungry Korimako, Hihi, and Tūī birds. Additionally, Kākā and Kākāriki find cozy hollows in Kōtukutuku trunks to lay their eggs, making it a vital part of our ecosystem. Not to mention, the berries from this tree are beloved by both birds and people.
I’ve even created a pair of stunning fuchsia earrings inspired by these bright and pretty colors. If you’d like to see them, check them out through the link below 🙂🌸🍃
